A Little More About Ms. Whisler
Personal
Name: Vicki L. Whisler
Birthday: November 15
School/Degree: Western Michigan University BA Secondary Ed/English, MA Educational Technology
Hobbies: Theatre, Genealogy, Hiking, Fantasy Football, Flipping Houses
Family: I have a daughter, Melissa, who lives in Chicago with her husband and my grandchildren, Archer and Addison. I have a son, Benjamin, who lives in Michigan and has an awesome job as a civil engineer. I also have a crazy kitty, Sydnee.
2009-2010 was my first year at Collegium, and I am very excited to be a part of the Collegium family. I moved to Pennsylvania in June 2009 after living in Michigan all my life. While in Michigan I taught middle school English at Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts. I went to college at Western Michigan University and earned my BA in Secondary English with minors in History and Communication. I earned my Master's degree April 2009 in Educational Technology.
I am a big theatre geek. I started the theatre program at Maple Street and directed 19 shows during my eight years there. I was also very active in the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. I was in front of the curtain only once though. I'd much rather be either directing, stage managing, or running some technical aspect of the show. I joined the CCS Theatre program in 2011 helping with props, lights, and stage management. I became a member of the artistic team when I directed my first show, Little Women, in October 2014 and was costume designer and co-stage-manager for Cinderella Enchanted in March 2015. Last year I directed The Westing Game, stage managed The Sound of Music and served as Managing Director for CCST. This year I will be stage managing Twelve Angry Jurors and directing The Music Man.
I have recently started researching my family's genealogy. Genealogy research is a lot more complicated than I ever thought, but it is so rewarding and interesting finding out about my ancestors. I completed compiling the materials necessary for membership to the Society of the War of 1812 (a society for descendants of people who served in the War of 1812) I am also a direct descendant of Francis Cooke who was on the Mayflower. My next goal is to prove that ancestry and become a member of the very prestigious Mayflower Society. Getting the records necessary for membership may take several years and many hours of research, but it will be a huge accomplishment when I'm finally accepted.
One thing I've really missed since leaving Michigan is the time I used to spend in nature: camping, fishing, boating, hiking. Last summer we took our first camping trip to French Creek State Park where we rented a cabin. It was a very hot and humid week, but I really enjoyed being unplugged and spending time sitting around the campfire with good friends. Because Bruce also enjoyed the experience so much we ended up buying a foreclosure up in the Poconos that we are rehabbing and hope to flip shortly. We love spending our weekends in the mountains with the deer.
