Welcome to Honors Modern Literature
The eleventh grade honors modern literature curriculum focuses on a novel-based approach to literature. Over the course of the year, students will read a variety of different novels in order to further develop comprehension skills, writing skills, and speaking skills. The novels that will be read over the course of this year are challenging and the nightly reading will be extensive, as such, this course is considered to be the prerequisite for AP literature in twelfth grade.
There are links to each of our units in the navigation bar above. Specific resources for each unit will be added throughout the year.
Materials Required for Class
- Writing utensil--a pen will be required for all in-class essays
- Reader’s Notebook--Students will be required to keep a notebook to keep track of their responses as they read, respond to prompts given by me, and to take lecture notes. (See Reader’s Notebook Handout for more information)
- 3 x 5 cards--We will use 3 x 5 cards a lot this year--for daily quizzes, exit cards, quick responses, and discussion questions. Each student should have a pack of 100.
- Folder or binder--In addition to the Reader’s Notebook, students will be given several handouts throughout the course of the year.
- Planner/Assignment Book--All students are expected to have some kind of organizational calendar so they can keep track of assignment due dates. Due dates will be given in class, posted on the board, and posted in PowerSchool. There are no excuses for not knowing when something is due.
- Multi-color pens--suggested, not required. Many students find it easier to color code their Reader’s Notebook by using various color pens. (See Reader’s Notebook Handout for more information.)
